महात्मा बुद्ध का जन्म
भगवान बुद्ध का जन्म 563 ईसा पूर्व में नेपाल के कपिलवस्तु के पास लुम्बिनी में हुआ था। कपिलवस्तु उस समय से शाक्य महाजनपद की राजधानी थी। इनके पिता का नाम शुद्धोधन था, जो शाक्य गण के प्रमुख थे और माता का नाम माया देवी था। सिद्धार्थ के जन्म से 7 दिन बाद ही उनकी माता का निधन हो गया था। उनका पालन पोषण उनकी मौसी और शुद्धोधन की दूसरी रानी महाप्रजावती (गौतमी) ने किया।
महात्मा बुद्ध की शिक्षा और विवाह
सिद्धार्थ ने गुरु विश्वामित्र से वेद, उपनिषद की पढाई की और साथ ही साथ राजकाज और युद्ध-विद्या की भी शिक्षा ग्रहण की । कुश्ती, घुड़दौड़, तीर-कमान, रथ हाँकने में कोई उनकी बराबरी नहीं कर पाता।
सोलह वर्ष की उम्र में सिद्धार्थ का विवाह यशोधरा नाम की कन्या के साथ हुआ। विवाह के कुछ समय पश्च्यात उन्हें एक पुत्र रत्ना की प्राप्ति हुयी जिसका नाम राहुल रखा गया। उसके कुछ समय पश्च्यात उनका मन वैवाहिक जीवन से हटने लगा और वैराग्य में चला गया और सुख-शांति की खोज में उन्होंने अपने परिवार का त्याग कर दिया।

बुद्ध पूर्णिमा मनाये जाने का कारण
भगवान बुद्ध ने जब अपने जीवन में हिंसा, पाप और मृत्यु के बारे में जाना, तब से उन्होंने मोह और माया को त्याग दिया और उन्होंने अपने परिवार को छोड़कर सभी जिम्मेदारियों से मुक्ति हो गए और खुद सत्य की खोज में निकल पड़े। इसके पश्च्यात महात्मा बुद्ध को सत्य का ज्ञान हुआ।
वहीं, वैशाख पूर्णिमा की तिथि का भगवान बुद्ध के जीवन की प्रमुख घटनाओं से विशेष संबंध है जैसे इसी दिन उन्हें बुद्धत्व की प्राप्ति हुई, इसी दिन इनका जन्मदिवस और निर्वाण भी हुआ था । इसी वजह से हर साल वैशाख पूर्णिमा को बुद्ध पूर्णिमा मनाई जाती है।
बुद्ध पूर्णिमा का महत्व
बुद्ध पूर्णिमा के दिन सूर्योदय के बाद स्नान आदि करने के बाद श्री हरि विष्णु की पूजा की जाती है। इस दिन धर्मराज की पूजा करने की भी मान्यता है। कहते हैं कि सत्यविनायक व्रत से धर्मराज खुश होते हैं। माना जाता है कि धर्मराज मृत्यु के देवता हैं इसलिए उनके प्रसन्न होने से अकाल मौत का डर कम हो जाता है।
मान्यता है कि पूर्णिमा के दिन तिल और चीनी का दान शुभ होता है और समस्त पापों से भी मुक्ति मिलती है।
बुद्धत्व की प्राप्ति
हिंदू शास्त्रों के अनुसार, बुद्ध जब महज 29 साल के थे, तब उन्होंने संन्यास धारण कर लिया था और फिर उन्होंने बोधगया में पीपल के पेड़ के नीचे 6 साल तक कठिन तप किया था। वो बोधिवृक्ष बिहार के गया जिले में आज भी स्थित है।
महात्मा बुद्ध का पहला उपदेश
भगवान गौतम ने अपना पहला उपदेश सारनाथ में दिया था। जहां उन्हें पूरी तरह से जागृत माना जाता है। उन्होंने 45 सालों तक धर्म, अहिंसा, सद्भाव और दया के रास्ते पर चलने का उपदेश दिया था। बौद्ध धर्म पूरी तरह से महात्मा बुद्ध की शिक्षाओं पर आधारित है। जानकारी के मुताबिक एक शाही परिवार में पैदा होने के बावजूद उन्होंने विलासी जीवन को त्याग दिया और 30 साल की उम्र में घर छोड़ दिया था।
